What are we going to do today?

That was the question asked this morning when we woke to yet another grey, wet and dismal day.
Another day spent cooped up in the house was out of the question and anyway I'd booked the day off so no way was I spending it knocking round the house. So when Mr D said well let's go to the House of Marbles the kids and I jumped at the idea.
And what a brilliant idea it was.
A journey over the moors in the fog driving cautiously so to avoid the sheep who have a tendency to make the road their temporary home was well worth it. The House of Marbles is home to a museum all about marbles and glass, amazing marble runs,

the chance to watch something being made

plenty to keep the boys amused

And all set in an incredible setting,

And then there were the very tempting items to buy,

We were very good,
though we do intend to go back before Christmas!!

Oh and I mustn't forget the boys treat of a bag of their own hand picked marbles a very worthy bag of treasure. And the day didn't end there as Mr D had another trick up his sleeve! In the same village was the Devon Guild of Craftsmen an excellent exhibition place and shop that I've been wanting to visit for quite some time. Oh I was so excited!!

And it didn't disappoint in fact it made me wish I'd stayed focused when I was at art college, but as they say the youth is wasted on the young and at the end of the day I had some living to do.

And the treat of a day didn't end there as Mr D knew of a shop nearby that might interest me, just a little!
It's very surprising what can be found in a sleepy Devon Village

A lovely quilting shop with 20% off in August where I managed to get some lovely flannel prints for trousers for #3, 4 fq of  French General Rouenneries to make those napkins that I promised my parents to match their table runner and a couple of other prints that I couldn't leave the shop without!!!!

Oh thank you Mr D,
what an excellent day out regardless of the constant rain, you found that something for all of us!

  2. That sounds like such a fun day for everyone. I wish we had quilt shops around here - I'd love to be able to see stuff before buying.

You've obviously been getting similar weather to us. Our summer holidays have been so wet we haven't done half the things I'd imagined we'd do. Such a shame.

Thanks for your comment (I'm hoping to get back into blogging this week!). I haven't been able to find any in the UK either and can't really think of a suitable substitute. This came from fabric.com which worked out OK - just need to watch the cost to avoing customs charges (I think its got to be under £18). Let me know if you want a link to the actual fabric on the site and I'll try and remember exactly what it was. What have you been using?

  3. Sounds fantastic - my two boys would have loved the marble place. We were near Bovey Tracey last week - I wish I had known about the fabric shop! We couldn't believe the amount of fog around - in August!

  4. That looks like a great day out, my boys would love the House of Marbles and it's even better that you and Mr D also got a treat. I love days out that work for everyone.

We are working out lots wet weather treats for this week as it looks like our luck with the sun has run out.
